Arizona's Grand Canyon. A
picture can't capture the experience.
Visiting the Grand
Canyon is not unlike studying a beautiful painting.
Once you've immersed yourself in the subject matter,
you can't resist moving beyond the colour and composition
to discover a deeper meaning. A vast and ancient
landform that sprawls over 4,930 square kilometres
and reaches 1,600 metres into the Earth, the majestic
Grand Canyon offers photo opportunities from sunrise
to sunset. But at the same time, it issues an invitation
to a more profound encounter. Simply put, there's
a lot to see besides the view. And once you begin
to truly explore the canyon, you'll experience something
that can't be captured in a photograph.
Today, we're free to explore parts of the Grand
Canyon that humans couldn't reach a century ago,
and that accessibility is part of the canyon's
continuing power to inspire us. Bus tours and
lodging, hiking via the Bright Angel, South Kaibab,
Grandview and Hermit trails, camping, mule riding,
Colorado river rafting and helicopter tours all
combine to allow for a truly three-dimensional
experience of this natural masterpiece — you can
even arrive at the canyon by train. At Phantom
Ranch, located at the very bottom of the canyon
on the north side of the Colorado River, you'll
enjoy a unique view of the Grand Canyon from the
bottom up, one that connects the north rim to
the south rim — and links you to its indelible
grandeur. A detour to remote Havasu Falls leads
you to an unbelievably azure waterfalls that spills
liquid turquoise into a pool below. Once you experience
the canyon from a range of perspectives, the sheer
magnitude of one of nature's wonders begins to
sink in.
