Mystic Trails, Sun-dappled Woodland
The Northumberland trails brochure (available for free) features over
24 trails, including the Waterfront
Trail and Peter's Woods, the only surviving remnant of the
famous Oak Ridges Moraine old-growth forest. Whether you like hiking,
horseback riding, geocaching or simply gazing at the sky-high forest,
there's a trail here for you.
In the Ganaraska Forest,
you'll have unlimited opportunities to spot local flora
and fauna. A favourite destination is Presqu'ile
Provincial Park, just south of Brighton. Home to a range
of wild habitats, from marsh and forest to a 2.5-kilometre-long
beach, the park is ideal for birdwatching. At Ferris Provincial
Park, venture onto the 90-metre Ranney
Gorge Suspension Bridge for an unrivalled view of the Trent
River.
Water and Beaches
There's plenty of it! With Lake Ontario to the south and the Trent-Severn
Waterway and Rice Lake to the north, there's a wealth of
water-recreation opportunities, from swimming and sailing to fly
fishing.
A peaceful five-hour canoe paddle along the Crowe River
or a cruise aboard the Caravelle
II on Rice Lake both offer a blissful natural heritage
voyage you won't soon forget. And you can easily extend
your stay at a country inn or family
resort along the shores of Rice Lake.
Cobourg is renowned for its extensive sandy beaches. A perfect
summertime haven, the town has a water park for the kids and
plenty of opportunities for the whole family to play volleyball.
From Golf to Tranquil Spas
Northumberland's natural rolling terrain lends itself
to superb golfing. Green fees can start as low as $15, and
some courses offer special packages that include meals, accommodation
and visits to the spa. Northumberland also happens to be home
to some of Canada's best destination spas, including Ste.
Anne's Spa and The
Hillcrest – A Valenova Spa.
