Riding the Rails
To the lighthouse
Prince
Edward Island (map) has relied on the sea for transportation
and commerce for hundreds of years. Although it may be a small mass of
land,
the lighthouses
dotting its shores have always reminded seafarers of its presence.
Point
Prim (map), located at the tip of a peninsula in the southeast
of the island at the mouth of Hillsborough
Bay (map), is the oldest
lighthouse on the island. Built in 1846, it is one of the few lighthouses
made
of brick in Canada.
The dozens of lighthouses across the island range from unique architecture,
some being solely ornamental, to simple range lights to warn ships
of rocks or shoreline and to help guide them in to the island's
harbours.
Visiting lighthouses around the island provides a stunning and
historical tour of the province and views off the coast of all
points of the
island.
