Following a Plan

Each Catholic Church is unique in its own way, but there are basic elements that are found throughout the churches.

The pulpit and the lectern are situated on either side of the chancel, with a communion railing for kneeling. A communion table or altar faces the congregation and there is usually a small boundary, consisting of three steps, separating the nave and the chancel.

It is common in most Catholic Churches for the nave to be a semi-circle that surrounds the chancel. This construction provides a theater-in-the-round effect.
