Peaks of interest

The peaks of the Tantalus Range (map) are enough to make climbers drool. The allure and inaccessibility of the mountains that loom over Squamish are how they got their name.

The story of Tantalus is a Greek legend of a man who was banished to the underworld and forced to spend his days up to his neck in water with succulent fruit hanging over his head. Each time he would reach for a piece of delicious fruit it would move just out of his reach, giving meaning to the word "tantalize."

The string of spectacular peaks tantalized climbers when they admired them across the Squamish River (map), but couldn't access them because of the river's fast moving water. In 1911, a team led by Basil Darling climbed the range's highest peak, Mount Tantalus. The range has continued to be a hot spot for serious climbers.

Follow a five-day trek through Tantalus Provincial Park.
