Explorer
The bald and the beautiful

A river runs through it

Ashulu Creek, a large tributary to the Squamish River (map), runs from spectacular falls into a lower canyon surrounded by dramatic granite exposures that make it a haven for whitewater enthusiasts. The creek is also home to the area's plentiful populations of trout and various salmon species. Unfortunately, this vibrant habitat was listed as the sixth most endangered river in British Columbia in 2004.

Located 25 kilometres from the town of Squamish (map), the Ashulu Creek is threatened by a number of Independent Power Projects (IPP) that have active applications to build on its shores. There are concerns that environmental and recreational assessments have not been thorough enough to ensure the livelihood of the river. Opponents to the project fear the environmental impacts when several IPPs are built in close proximity to one another on the same river.
