Circus city
Site with vision
The bigger picture of the vast experimental project at Saint-Michel
Environmental Complex is an ambitious and inventive one. In fact,
nearly 100 foreign delegations visit the site each year for a closer
look at what the eclectic project is doing and how it is working
out.
The vision for the site has been taking shape ever since
the City of Montréal began the master development plan
for the environmental complex in 1995, gradually turning North
America's second-largest landfill site into an urban
recreational area as big as Mount Royal Park. The plan is
an ongoing metamorphosis of the area that continues to evolve
to include educational, athletic, cultural and commercial
purposes.
The complex includes a recycling center, a green composting
site, a landfill site, a power plant that runs of off gas
produced from the decomposing landfill and, of course, the
circus arts city. Although tohu may seem out of place at first,
its involvement helps fulfill the organization's three-part
mission to contribute to the culture, environment and community
of Saint-Michel as home to their phenomenal circus arts complex.
Tohu helps to bring the eclectic complex together by providing
tours by foot, minibus and bicycle to the public. A guided
90-minute environmental safari takes curious visitors on a
free bike ride, with recycled bikes provided, along paths
around the perimeter of the complex as part of an awareness
enhancement program for the public.
