Menu fit for a polar bear

Appetizer
Skin and blubber of ringed seal: Representing about 90 percent of the polar bear's diet, the skin and blubber of the seal are eaten before the meat. A polar bear can sit motionless for hours waiting for a seal to come up for air from under sea ice.

Salad
Seaweed-wrapped mussels and crab on a bed of moss: The polar bear typically eats whatever seafood it can find. On land, it searches out seasonal plants for their nutrients.

Entree
Rack of whale: Whether it's a beluga swimming into shallow water or a carcass washing ashore, whales are considered a true smorgasbord for the polar bear. More than 40 years at a time have been seen feasting on a bowhead carcass.

Dessert
Seasonal delicacies: Like all bears, the polar bear eats berries such as blueberries, bake apples and "paungna" (a northern blackberry).

Note: Entree may also consist of walrus, seabirds, regional fish or caribou.
