Behind the names
The meanings of the name Ukkusiksalik, and the names and meanings of some of the places in the area surrounding it:
Ukkusiksalik Park: The newest of Canada's National parks, Ukkusiksalik means "the place where there is stone that can be used to carve pots and oil lamps."
Sirmilik Park: Sirmilik encompasses three environments on Baffin Island — Bylot Island, Borden Peninsula, and Oliver Sound.
Sirmilik means "place of glaciers."
Auyuittuq Park: Auyuittuq was established in 1976 and was the world's first park above Arctic Circle. It means "land that
never melts."
Aulavik Park: Aulavik was established in 1992 on Banks Island. It means "place where people travel" in Inuvialuktun
Quttinirpaaq Park: Quttinirpaaq was formed in 1992 on Ellesmere Island. It means "top of the world."
Sila Lodge: An Inuit run lodge in Ukkusiksalik Nation Park, Sila is an Inuktitut word meaning "climate and all things that
surround us."
Nunavut: Nunavut, formed as a territory in 1999, is an Inuktitut word meaning "our land."
Arviat: Arviat, a community west of Hudson's Bay and Canada's geographical centre, means "place of the bowhead whale" in Inuktitut.
Baker Lake: Baker Lake, the only non-coastal Inuit settlement in Nunavut is also known as Qamani'tuaq. It means "big lake
joined by a river at both ends."
Chesterfield Inlet: Chesterfield Inlet, the oldest community in Nunavut, is also known as Igluligaarjuk. It means 'place with few houses."
Clyde River: Clyde River, the possible site of a bowhead whale sanctuary, is also known as Kangiqtugaapik. It means "nice
little inlet."
Whale Cove: Whale Cove is on the west coast of Hudson's Bay, and is also known as Tikirarjuaq meaning "long point."
