The town of Churchill (map) lies in a transition zone between boreal forest and tundra at the mouth of the Churchill River. That makes the surrounding region an ideal home for woodland and barren ground caribou. Visitors might also glimpse black bears, moose and grey wolves among the taiga's black and white spruce.

In addition, Churchill is an important destination for birdwatchers from early June to early July, providing one of the more convenient, southerly vantage points for the Arctic resident Ross's gull. Some 175 bird species have been spotted locally, and a rare-bird alert board at Akudlik Marsh, just outside town, lists recent sightings.

Birders often flock to Bird Cove, where the wreck of the Ithaca, which ran aground during a windstorm in the 1960s, is partially submerged.
