Location, location

Bears, birds and belugas all play their part in making ecotourism Churchill's main economic resource. But by virtue of its locality within Canada, the small town has always capitalized on its prime location. Even though there is not one road leading in or out of Churchill, its busy rail line and airport act as a main transportation centres for Canada's North. This coming and going is also due to Churchill (map) being the only inland saltwater port in Canada. Goods brought from the south by rail or air are distributed by sea vessels and barges to points across the north.

Churchill is also a centre for scientists to use as a base for their research. The Churchill Northern Studies Centre and the Institute of Arctic Ecophysiology host researchers studying aurora borealis, arctic fauna and wildlife, and the culture of the Inuit, Dene, Cree and Europeans who have lived on the shores of Hudson Bay.
