Geocaching in the Eastern Townships

Rules

Presently there are some concerns that geocaching and the hiding of caches may have an adverse impact on environmentally sensitive lands as well as on sites of historical and archeological significance in Canada. Caches placed on property managed by Parks Ontario and Conservation Reserves are not currently being approved pending development regulations.

Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) has drafted a geocaching guideline to be followed when on its lands. The guideline rules include:

  • Any person wishing to place a cache on HCA lands must have a permit grant by the HCA.
  • Caches are not to be placed in sensitive ecological, historical or archeological locations.
  • No digging or disruption of the ground is permitted when placing the cache.
  • Directions to the cache should follow established trails as far as possible to the cache.
  • Off trail hiking is discouraged as it negatively impacts the environment.
