Geocaching in the Eastern Townships

Variations on the game

Some twists on the game that have developed over the years (all accessible at www.geocaching.com):

  • Locationless (reverse) caches Geocachers look for the coordinates of an object, rather than a hidden container.
  • Multi-caches The first cache gives a clue to the next cache, then the next , and so on.
  • Mystery, or puzzle, cache Geocachers solve puzzles to determine the coordinates of the cache or a general reference point near the cache, and are then led on further challenges.
  • Virtual caches No actual cache to find. Geocachers visit a landmark and are then required to do a task or answer a question on the website to prove they visited.

  • Offset caching Geocachers look for the coordinates of a particular site, such as a monument. Based on clues at that site or on the website, geocachers then look for the nearby cache.
  • Webcam cache Geocachers visit a webcam placed by individuals or agencies, get in front of the camera and save their pictures as a log entry.
