Geocaching in the Eastern Townships

Gear guide

A GPS unit is crucial in geocaching; without it the game cannot be played. Here are a few types and makes in varying price ranges to help you on your way to your first cache.

  • Garmin eTrex
This unit is a six-ounce, 12-channel, hand held GPS receiver with a built-in patch antenna. It stores 500 waypoints, which allows you to navigate back to any of these points at any given time. Its automatic track log saves up to 10 tracks to help you retrace your path should you need it. The unit stores 1 route with up to 50 waypoints. It has a display resolution of 64/128 pixels, 3103 pixels per square inch.
    Cost: about 130 CAD
  • Garmin eTrex Venture
Similar to Garmin eTrex, this unit stores 500 waypoints, and has an automatic track log that saves up to 10 tracks. The Venture however can store 20 routes with up to 50 waypoints each, and houses 1MB internal memory for downloading locations and points of interest. It has a built-in calendar with best fishing and hunting time recommendations for those taking a break from geocaching. Its display resolution is 160/288 pixels, 17545 pixels per inch. A worldwide city database is pre-loaded into memory.
    Cost: about 170 CAD
  • Garmin eTrex Summit
The Summit has all the above features, but this is the unit for the hard-core outdoorsman. Its barometric altimeter provides exact current minimum and maximum elevation information so you can tell how high you have climbed and your rate of ascent and descent. The barometer has a local pressure and 12-hour automatic trend, which could assist in identifying weather trends.
    Cost: about 230 CAD
