Rallying for rallysport
Local heroes
In the spirit of true East Coast charm and hospitality,
the people of Newfoundland do what they can to roll out the
red carpet for visitors during the Targa Newfoundland event.
They graciously give up their roads to the race and many people
volunteer their time to make sure the event runs smoothly
and safely.
Over the course of the two-day event, volunteer marshals work diligently
to mark the course with tape to keep the drivers on track and
the pedestrians safely on the sidelines. The streets of neighbourhoods
become lined with yellow tape that marks the course and red tape
marking car run-off zones where they can exit the course. Signs
are also placed along the track to highlight turns to the navigators
and drivers. Local car enthusiasts also volunteer to be scrutineers, or
tech inspectors, to make sure all cars meet safety regulations
with roll cages, proper tires, helmets and fire extinguishers.
And of course the event is well prepared for the rare occasions
when things don't run smoothly. The St. John Ambulance
volunteers to provide first aid and tow teams are ready to
help out if they are needed.
