Explore the shore

There are a variety of speeds available for competitive types looking to explore the shores of Newfoundland this September. The stunning coast will play host to the Viking to Vinland Half Marathon and the first Tour De Shore Cyclists Race.

The Viking to Vinland marathon will take participants of the 10-kilometre half marathon race along the coast of the northernmost tip of the province through the UNESCO World Heritage site that is North America's only authenticated Viking settlement. It is believed that Vinland, the settlement, was established here by Norse Viking Leif Erikson around 1000 A.D. The race takes place on September 2, 2006.

The shores of the Southern Avalon Peninsula, in southeastern Newfoundland, will play host to the two-day, 198-kilometre Tour De Shore cycling road race. The area is connected to the main island by an isthmus and the area is comprised of a number of peninsulas and inlets, and rugged coasts dotted with fishing villages. The race is designed to appeal to all levels of cycling enthusiasts, with a day planned for amateur racing and another for professional racing. The first Tour De Shore takes to the roads on September 2 and 3, 2006.
