Winter in the wilderness

Contemplating a ski vacation this winter? Picture yourself swooshing along a peaceful wooded wilderness trail that winds through a snowy landscape. In Canada, there are dozens of wilderness lodges that cater to all levels of skill, offering everything from a few hours of rhythmic cross-country to day-long telemark tours. Wilderness lodges run the gamut from bare bones to luxurious, and each lets you choose just how big a helping of "wild" you can handle. Some offer all the amenities of a first-class hotel, right down to gourmet food, fine service and cozy down duvet. If you're craving a no-frills getaway, there's also a wood-heated cabin waiting for you. Check the links below for more information on the finest backcountry lodges in Canada.

"Adventure for the inquisitive spirit" is the claim to fame of Voyageur Quest. Outside of the summer season's hiking and canoeing, the company offers Algonquin Park lodge-based holidays all-year-long. In winter, dogsledding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ice-fishing attract outdoor enthusiasts to the central Ontario wilderness mecca. While the operators offer a variety of guided trips, the facility is also available for private bookings.

Smoothwater is an outfitter and ecolodge that specializes in lodge-based programs and adventures in Temagami's backcountry. The harmonious interaction with nature includes skiing, snowshoeing and dogsledding for adventurers based in the main lodge or bunkhouse accommodation. The trails are maintained without spoiling the surround wilderness and delicious organic cuisine is always on the menu.

www.capebretonisland.com/ski-tuonela
The only telemark hill in Canada's Martimes is located on Cape Breton Island. Ski-Tuonela is located near Goose Cove in the island's snowbelt, and it has been a serviced trail since 1997. The trail system is operated by a not-for-profit Nova Scotia association and you need to register as a member (at a very reasonable fee) to use the facilities for day skiing, (although non-member, overnight packages are also offered.) A chalet, bunkhouse and cabin round out the housekeeping accommodations available in this wilderness setting. All you only need to bring is your food.

www.mountengadine.com
Mount Engadine Lodge is a breathtaking Rocky Mountain facility located in Kananaskis Country. The area offers all kinds of skiing options, including cross-country, telelmark or touring. Many winter trails are located right outside the lodge, while a longer network of trails is available in nearby Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. The lodge is comfortable with fireplaces and loads of windows overlooking the surrounding landscape, and the wholesome, home-made meals are delicious.

www.num-ti-jah.com
Located 40 kilometres north of Lake Louise in Banff National Park, Num-Ti-Jah Lodge overlooks Bow Lake at the foot of Crowfoot Glacier. With lots of deep snow and days of blue sky, winter at Num-Ti-Jah is a welcoming destination for skiers and snowshoers who want to explore the area along numerous trails or across untracked open country.
