Lighting Up Manitoulin Island

Manitoulin Island is the largest freshwater island in the world. Hugging the mainland of northern Georgian Bay, the island's shores and rocky outcroppings were once guarded by nearly a dozen lighthouses that helped historical sailors navigate northern Lake Huron's treacherous surf. As a country bordered by water, Canada has a love affair with the lighthouse. Manitoulin's oldest standing beacon is the Mississagi Lighthouse on Meldrum Bay, which was built in 1873. Today, the lighthouse is a museum, displaying artifacts that portray the sacrifice and dedication of the 19th-century lighthouse keeper, as well as relics from local shipwrecks. Check the links below for more information on great Georgian Bay getaways.

Welcome to Manitoulin Island is the local tourism authority's directory of all the essential links you need to get the most out of your visit. Travel links include all the basics, such as accommodation and restaurants, First Nations culture, local events, museums and galleries, plus an all-important connection to Chi-Cheemaun ("The Big Canoe") ferry service that shuttles tourists four times each day between Torbermory and Manitoulin's South Baymouth.

Here's a really neat site. The Lighthouses of Manitoulin could be inspiration enough for a trip to Georgian Bay. The site offers interesting history of the near dozen lighthouses that once traced the shore of the island. Some of the old structures remain while others have been replaced by electronic signalling systems. For instance, the Mississagi Lighthouse on Meldrum Bay, which is the oldest standing structure of its kind, is now managed as a museum. Like a treasure hunt, a lighthouse tour could become the logic behind your island tour.

The Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reservation is the only First Nations band whose land title was never ceded to government or European settlers either by treaty or force. The reserve comprises the entire eastern peninsula of Manitoulin Island and is surrounded, in part, by Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. It's a rare example on the Canadian landscape where First Nations people enjoy autonomy to preserve and protect their resources and culture while enjoying the conveniences of modern life. For tourists, the annual fall fair is the community's longest running event, there is a pow-wow, music festival, marina heritage centre plus a theatre of performing arts.
