British Columbia's Haida Heritage

A rare example of century-old Haida culture stands on a remote island beach in British Columbia's Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve. At SGang Gwaii, there is a haunting collection of 28 memorial poles, the largest assemblage of its kind in North America. Along with the ruins of mid-19th century longhouses, these monuments give silent testimony to the ingenuity of Haida art and to a rich culture that dates back 10,000 years. Haida chiefs made a joint decision to avoid using preservatives on these sacred objects many years ago and the poles are becoming increasingly fragile, wearing down and returning to the earth. Check the links below for more information SGang Gwaii or the heritage of the Haida.
