Life's a Beach in PEI
Abegweit or “cradle in the waves” was
the original Mi'kmaq name for Prince Edward Island.
Surrounded by ocean, the tiny island is outlined by some 1,600
kilometres of scenic coast that is carved with countless rivers,
bays and estuaries. Breathtakingly rugged sandstones cliffs
rise above the shores and are the work of wind and tide on
ancient bedrock. While Prince Edward Island measures a modest
224 kilometres from head to toe, it boasts the highest ratio
of beachfront-to-surface area in the country, which makes
it the perfect setting for investigating the secrets of tidal
life or how grains of sand become beautiful white dunes. Check
the links below for more information on trips to the Garden
in the Gulf.

The Government of Prince Edward Island's tourism authority is proud
of its beaches. Visit the "Beaches" list on the vacation planner
menu of the province's Visitors Guide and you'll see why. Among
the many charms of this island Eden, there is a P.E.I beach for every
vacation appetite from the sand-snoozer to aquatic adventurer. If, for
whatever godforsaken reason, beaches aren't your thing, the Vacation
Planner makes it simple to find other aspects of island life to catch
your fancy.

Parks Canada's Prince Edward Island National Park web site picks
up where the recreational beach story leaves off. Beaches are, in fact,
complex ecosystems unto themselves and the natural-heritage section of
the site reminds visitors of the sensitive and fragile nature of these
landforms. This is an important stop to make before you take the trip
as there is a wealth of information on respectful and responsible usage
that is central to maintaining the ecological integrity of the beach complex.

The provincial parks link of the Government of Prince Edward Island site
provides an exhaustive summary of the fabulous park facilities on the
tiny island. Campground parks, day-use parks and heritage sites are all
listed here along with fees, schedules and special programs for each destination.
This is a jam-packed resource. PEI may be tiny but this web site packs
a wicked techno-punch — it's fully equipped with both maps and
a variety of text-information files in PDB and PQA format that you can
easily download to your personal digital assistant. Have Palm Pilot will
