Banff Film Festival
It's been 30 years since the first climbing enthusiasts
met in Banff, Alberta, to view the world's best mountaineering
films. Since that humble beginning, the Banff Film Festival has
blossomed into a week-long celebration of high places that attracts
10,000 faithful from all over the planet. Against the spectacular
backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, this year's festival opens
on October 27 with feature-length mountain films and continues with
select programs developed from hundreds of festival submissions.
A star-studded cast of mountain legends will share their peak experiences.

Located in Banff, the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies is another outstanding
institution of mountain culture. Founded to assist in the educational, cultural
and aesthetic pursuits connected with the Rockies, the Whyte Museum has been a home
for mountain culture and history since it was established by Peter and Catharine Whyte.
Both artists, the couple met at the Boston Museum School of Fine Art in 1927, but their
shared love of Canadian landscape and its merits as artistic subject matter drew them west
to the Rockies. Their generosity and lifelong passion for mountain culture culminated in the
establishment of the Whyte Museum in 1968. Today, the museum's collections include archival
records and publications, art and cultural artefacts, plus several culturally signifcant
heritage homes. It's a wonderful site and there is lots to savour in its online exhibitions.
