Northern Ontario

Leisure and Recreation

Recreational opportunities in Northern Ontario are endless. Each season offers the outdoor enthusiast plenty of outdoor opportunities. Summer is the time to explore the waterways and hiking trails of the area. Mountain biking is another summer favourite. Canoe routes vary in length from short day trips to more rigorous whitewater paddles that can take you all the way to James Bay.

Provincial Parks in Northern Ontario are remarkable. Quetico Park, just northwest of Thunder Bay, offers remote and rugged canoe routes with fantastic animal-watching potential. Lake Superior Provincial Park boasts one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the province. Its spectacular scenery inspired Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris.

Closer to the Muskoka region, Algonquin Park, one of Ontario's most treasured slices of wilderness, remains a haven for wolves, beaver and bears. In the winter, Northern Ontario provides enough snow for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. An intricate system of trails along the Trans Canada Highway delights winter lovers. There are also great ski and snowboard hills scattered throughout the region.
