Northern Ontario
Geography and Geology
Approximately three billion years ago, the foundation upon which most
of Northern Ontario sits was formed. Known as the Canadian Shield, it
has some of the oldest exposed Precambrian rock on the planet. The Northern
Ontario portion of the shield is composed mostly of hills of ancient
crystalline rock measuring 30 metres. The dramatic rocky landscape was
moulded and smoothed by glaciers that also gouged out the thousands
of lakes that dot Northern Ontario.
