Avalon Peninsula
Industry
The majority of the communities
on the Avalon Peninsula are small coastal settlements that rely
primarily on fishing, lumbering and some manufacturing. St. John's,
however, is the exception, supporting an urban labour market,
including provincial and federal government, mining and manufacturing,
tourism and more. The small towns and villages that dot the coastline
were settled in harbours that offered essential natural resources,
such as wood, freshwater and access to near-shore fishing grounds.
An area know as the Southern Shore is one of the oldest fishing
communities in Newfoundland, dating back to the transatlantic
migratory cod fishery of the 16th century. Bay Bulls, Ferryland
and Renews are just some of the communities lining the shore.
Commercial agriculture, including dairy and root-crop production
are important in the area west of St. John's.
