Climate
The Avalon Peninsula is both the mildest and wettest part of the province. Rain and fog are common and winds can be furious. Mid-winter mean temperatures for southern Avalon average -3 degrees C and mid-summer temperatures average 16 degrees C, and a few degrees lower along the coast. Annual precipitation averages 150 centimetres and only 10 percent of that falls as snow. The chilling effect of the North Atlantic is tempered by the warmth of the Gulf Stream current which flows up the eastern seaboard of the United States and along the south coast of Newfoundland. Arctic ice rarely reaches the coastal area so harbours are navigable year round.
