Day 9: St.-Pierre, France
By day nine, the jammed-pack pace of the tour and my reluctance to miss anything was beginning
to dull my energy and enthusiasm. I remember the beginning of the bus tour around foggy St.
Pierre, and I remember the end, but the part in between was shrouded in the fog of my own sleepiness.

After the Newfoundland outports we had visited, the picturesque quality of the town was lost on me. Sorry, St. Pierre.

Mike Earle, one of our resource people, told about how the islanders had used cattle to lure ships
into the shallows by tying lanterns around their necks and letting them roam the beach, fooling ships
into thinking they were beacons. The locals would then scavenge any goods that washed ashore from the
wrecks. To me it seemed like a hit-and-miss way to shop, in addition to being murderous. And today with
the economy of this little chunk of France tied to the expensive imported goods in all its little shops,
this history seemed ironical as well.
After the Newfoundland outports we had visited, the picturesque quality of the town was lost on me. Sorry, St. Pierre. I will return someday when it’s sunny and warm, at the beginning of a trip, not the end, when I have a little more energy and a few more francs. |
