1. VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA

With a sophisticated cool that Canadians find irresistible, Vancouver easily claimed first place in our Best of the West contest. Canada's third largest city was cheered for its spectacular setting between sea and mountain, its ethnic diversity and its vibrant spectrum of cultural and recreational activities. Citizens and visitors alike are delighted by the city's devotion to green space, which includes the spectacular Stanley Park, beloved by nature lovers, joggers, walkers and sightseers. A world-class art gallery and ready access to great restaurants, theatre, opera, universities and colleges and professional sports teams all helped make this dynamic city the best of the best of the west.

This once sleepy little mountain community is the first word on everybody's lips when it comes to outdoor fun in the West. Whistler's reputation was built on alpine skiing, but the development of year-round recreational opportunities has made it one of North America's most appealing all-season destinations. For many Best of the West contest participants, Whistler, with its 24/7 mountain splendour, "has it all."

3. VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA

B.C.'s sunny seaside capital has a climate that is the envy of the country. But Victoria is also loved for its human scale, and the intimate yet cosmopolitan allure of its historic downtown and cultural life combine with "sea to sky" beauty to make this garden-rich city an enduring favourite.

4. TOFINO, BRITISH COLUMBIA

Canadians love to take a walk on the wild side in funky little Tofino. With the deep blue Pacific Ocean's pounding surf at its doorstep, the town is a four-season hot spot for surfers, anglers, adventurers, environmentalists, whale watchers and nature lovers from all over the world. Rain or shine, they are never disappointed.

5. VANCOUVER ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA

Nothing says "West Coast" to Canadians better than Vancouver Island. The largest North American island in the Pacific also sets records for physical diversity. Boasting mountains, sandy beaches, old-growth rain forest, hiking trails, parkland, inland lakes and rivers and more, the island is an embarrassment of riches.
