Then it's off to Tofino for three nights at the legendary
Wickaninnish Inn. Located on Vancouver Island's west coast, the celebrated
inn overlooks the Pacific surf and spectacular Chesterman Beach. From the
ocean-view room and private balcony, guests have an inspiring view from
which to experience first-hand the fresh sea air and the crashing waves
on the beach below. In keeping with the inn's commitment to the
environment, its furniture has been fashioned from recycled old-growth
fir, western
cedar and driftwood, while the textures of nature are reflected
in the wool sisal carpet, natural stone tile and rough-hewn cedar mantlepieces.
Tofino has a well-deserved reputation as the winter storm-watching
capital of the West Coast, and the Wickaninnish Inn's
location makes the experience even more memorable. Rain slickers
and guidebooks are available, and after an invigorating walk
in the elements, luxuriate in an oversized bath with aromatherapy
bath salts, then relax by the fire in comfortable armchairs
and thick terry robes.
The Wick experience features dinner at the distinctive Pointe
Restaurant, which famously showcases fresh coastal foods
and fine wines from the Pacific Northwest. Also part of the
Trans-Canada Tour Grand Prize package are a hot-stone massage
for two at the Wick's Ancient Cedars Spa; an "insiders
tour of the West Coast," with luxury transportation
provided by the Pacific Rim Navigators Company; an exclusive
guided ecotour by biologist Bill McIntyre of the Long Beach
Nature Tour Company; and a trip to Hot Springs Cove in the
heart of spectacular Clayoquot Sound, courtesy of Jamie's
Whaling Station.
