Yukon's capital city was once a handy way station for
prospectors in the Klondike gold
rush, but its location on the shores of the Yukon River and
its eventual situation at
the centre of rail and highway systems gave it staying power.
Sheltered in a valley and
surrounded by mountains and lakes, it avoids the brutal extremes
of the Far North
winter and boasts glorious 20-hour days in June. Dubbed "the
wilderness city,"
Whitehorse can also lay claim to spectacular vistas and a
reputation as a visitor-friendly
community that knows how to celebrate its past and present.

The territory's capital (and only) city, Yellowknife
is
perched on the north shore of the legendary Great Slave
Lake. Gold and diamond mining still drive the economy,
sled dogs abound, and the Old Town is dotted with
pioneer shacks, but Yellowknife's state-of-the-art
cultural
and heritage centres, museum, hospital and yacht clubs
make it a city for tomorrow.
3. DAWSON CITY, YUKON

Bursting with 30,000 gold-crazed adventurers at the close
of the 19th century, present-day Dawson City has grown
comfortable with a citizenry closer to 2,000. Nevertheless,
this high-energy town gives some 60,000 annual visitors a
glimpse into Canada's rollicking past they won't
soon forget.
Old-time architecture, sled dog competitions, dance halls and
gambling are all part of the action.

Thousands of years ago, nomadic Inuit roamed this rugged
Arctic landscape. Today, the country's newest capital city
sits at the head of Frobisher Bay, where it serves as the
gateway to the wonders of the Baffin region: breathtaking
seascapes, dazzling auroras, Thule ruins and wilderness
adventure in every direction.
5. ELU INLET, NUNAVUT

Sheltered by the Kent Peninsula at the northern edge of the
continent, Elu Inlet is a pristine wilderness whose shores bespeak
an ancient history. An abundance of wildlife and flora is just
part of the region's rich Arctic legacy.
