You'd be hard-pressed to find a Canadian canoe enthusiast
who hasn't found inspiration in the works of the late
Bill Mason. From an early age, the native Manitoban was himself
captivated by the canoe's magic, and it was a love affair
that informed his entire life.
After graduating from the University of Manitoba School of
Art in 1951, Mason had a hugely successful career in commercial
design, filmmaking, animation, writing and painting. It was
the elegant integration of paddling into so many of Mason's
creative endeavours, however, that distinguished his life
and works. Mason's passion for paddling took him into
the heart of some of Canada's most spectacular waterscapes,
which he chronicled on canvas and celluloid and in print.
His books Path of the Paddle: An Illustrated Guide to
the Art of Canoeing and Song of the Paddle: An Illustrated
Guide to Wilderness Camping along with his ground-breaking
films Waterwalker and Paddle to the Sea communicate
Mason's expertise as a canoeist and his awe at the beauty
of nature.
Since Mason died in 1988, just shy of 60, his family and
friends have dedicated themselves to keeping the artist's
works alive and available to all Canadians. This month, Bill
Mason Productions is hosting an online auction to sell two
original Bill Mason paintings. Both are oil-on-paper portraits
of Lake Superior locations, rendered in the miniature format
that Mason enjoyed. The first auction starts on Monday, November
14 and closes on November 27; the second starts on November
28 and closes December 11. For more information on the auction
and other Bill Mason works, visit www.redcanoes.ca
