Exploring Canada's great outdoors is the goal for Wild Women Expeditions
By Jackie Wallace
Helen Keller once said, "Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing." The women
behind Wild Women Expeditions (WWE) couldn't agree more. The nature-lovers version of "Girls
Gone Wild," the company has been offering women-only outdoor adventure trips from their base
in Northern Ontario for the last 15 years.
The brainchild of Beth Mairs, a self-proclaimed goddess and outdoor adventure addict,
WWE was carved out of her desire to make her love of actively enjoying the outdoors her day job.
Since the company's inception in 1991, WWE has been the inspirational outlet for thousands of women,
allowing them to spend their hard-earned vacations rambunctiously exploring Canada's vast natural
playground.
Based out of Sudbury, the company offers canoeing, kayaking, cycling and hiking adventures in the
area and across the lakes and trails of Ontario. Over the years, the company has extended its adventures
in all directions and now includes hiking in B.C., paddling in Manitoba and biking in Cape Breton.
They also offer retreats, such as one hosted by Canadian singer Jane Siberry, Wild Women In Training
camps for girls and introductory fly-fishing workshops. The base camp also offers delicious meals
and workshops for well-rounded renaissance women in necessities such as boxing and Native Spirituality.
The company aims to create a space for women in the great outdoors and offer a challenge to those who
enjoy going out on a limb, having a little fun and learning a thing or two while they are at it.
Expeditions are designed to appeal to women with a wide-range of outdoor experience, from the hardcore
or the hobby outdoorswomen, to the beginner. Some wild women come with a group of friends, while others
come alone and leave with a group of new pals. Over the years participants ranging in age from 18 to 86
from a variety of lifestyles, cultures and backgrounds have gotten together to get away from it all.
Mairs attributes the success of her company to the spunk and enthusiasm of women and, for her,
the roots of WWE lie in the thoughts of a Canadian icon of the strength and independence of women.
"It is wonderful to feel the grandness of Canada in the raw, not because she is Canada,
but because she's something sublime that you were born into, some great rugged power that you are part
of." – Emily Carr.
