Making a splash!
Throughout July, paddlers across the country will hit the whitewater in national competitions.
Starting July 4, the annual Canadian Whitewater National Championships will take place at Madawaska
Kanu Centre near Barry's Bay, Ont. An International Olympic Committee sanctioned event, the nationals
attract Canada's finest whitewater athletes who compete in slalom and downriver events.
More than 130 competitors from across the country are registered. Determined by provincial team trials,
men and women will vie for the top four positions in team and solo events for kayak and canoe classes.
The outcome, says organizer Mark Illing, determines a contestant's national ranking and seeding for
future World Cup events.
The wild weekend on water attracts elite Canadian competitors like solo slalom kayaker David Ford,
who is a three-time Olympian, Canadian National Champion and the winner of a bronze medal at the year's
first World Cup competition in May in Guandong, China. Also lined up in the gate is solo slalom
canoeist James Cartwright, who placed first at the United States trials and is considered among the top
North American paddlers in his class.
Between July 19 and 21, the North American Open Canoe Slalom Championships take place on the Class
III and IV rapids of the Gull River in Minden, Ont. The championship event, being held in Canada for
first time, attracts novice and seasoned competitors alike who shoot a 20- to 25-gate slalom course in
recreational and racing classes.
Series No. 6 of the Wildrock Joe/Jane Rodeo closes out the month on July 28. At this final whitewater
rodeo of the Wildrock series, hotdog freestyle jockeys catch big air in a variety of heart-stopping
aerials and flips at the S-Bend on the Ottawa River.
