The Adventure Zone

It may not be the kind of capital that would interest Donald Trump, but this April 22-23, the Nova Scotia Nature Trust is banking on a new scheme to encourage Nova Scotians to get active even as it raises money to preserve the province's special places. Its two-day Climb for Conservation fundraiser fires up at 6:30 p.m. on Earth Day when adult individuals and teams head out to Halifax's Beyond Gravity Climbing Gym to compete in the Corporate/Community Climbathon. The math is simple: The higher the number on your pledge sheet, the better your odds of taking home prizes from the Summer Adventure Program — from sea kayaking and hiking the Mabou Highlands to FitPro "Family Boot Camps" and more. Top fundraising prizes are even more sizzling — an adventure weekend at Liscombe Lodge, a yachting trip on Mahone Bay and a women's hiking trip with Scott Walking Tours.

Saturday is a fun-filled day with non-competitive events for families and youth, from three-legged and blindfolded climbs to scaling a virtual Mt. Everest — for points. Participants can warm up at a free learn-to-climb and video night on April 13 as well as the Saturday training session.

According to Nova Scotia Nature Trust executive director Bonnie Sutherland, it's all about making the connection between fun, fitness and the outdoors. That connection, she hopes, will help the next generation to appreciate the vital work that the Nature Trust has undertaken. Founded in 1994 by concerned citizens who wanted to protect the province's increasingly threatened ecologically significant lands, the conservation group has worked with dedicated donors, volunteers, local landowners and land stewards to protect more than 1,000 hectares of Nova Scotia's pristine coastline, old-growth forest and habitat for endangered flora and fauna.

Excitement, exercise, adventure and Nova Scotia special places — it's an inspired recipe for an action-packed weekend in early spring.
