Canadian Death Race
The remote landscape of Grand Cache, Alta., which sits atop a 1,280-metre
plateau some 140 kilometres north of Hinton, is home to the Canadian
Death Race. Billed as the toughest adventure racing event in the coutry,
Canadian Death is now challenging athletes during the harshest season by
adding a snowshoe component to the existing run and cycle series, which
takes place each summer and fall, respectively.
Snowshoers take off from Grande Cache on January 18 for three days of racing
along a 125-kilometre course that crosses Hell's Gate Canyon, the Smoky River and
three mountain summits, including 5,200 metres of elevation changes along the way.
Racers can compete individually or in relay teams and, given the grueling nature of
the course, are subject to "cut off" times at aid stations along the route. Competitors
who fail to reach checkpoints within the allotted time are disqualified (for their own
safety), but those who complete the course earn the coveted moniker of "Death Racer,"
joining an elite company of 25 competitors from around the world. For more information,
