Aday trip from
Victoria leads you into the Cowichan Valley, a rolling landscape dotted
with organic vegetable farms, apple orchards and newly planted
grapevines. A trip along the Malahat Highway
toward Duncan guides you past a range of young wineries —
Venturi-Schulze,
Blue Grouse, Alderlea, Cherry Point and Vigneti
Zanatta — that, in little more than a decade, have started
to make their way onto wine lists in Victoria's restaurants.
Many growers are working with lesser-known grape varieties, such
as Ortega, Pinot Auxerrois and Madeleine Sylvaner.

On the other side of the country, in Nova Scotia's
Annapolis Valley, Swiss-born Hanspeter Stutz is making
both wine and hard apple cider at Domaine
de Grand Pré, a renovated winery that
overlooks the tidal flats of the Minas Basin. From Habitant
Vineyards and Jost, you'll also find Nova Scotia wines made
from Maréchal Foch, lAcadie Blanc, Muscadine, Seyval
Blanc and Vidal grapes grown throughout the province.
