West Nile Virus in Canada
Along with the summer heat comes the predictable presence of buzzing, biting mosquitoes. But now they have become more than just an annoyance — some may be carriers of the West Nile Virus.
Tell us what precautions, if any, you are taking this summer to protect yourself and your family from the virus. Are you avoiding mosquito-prone areas such as marshes and lakes? Are you soaking yourself in insect repellent? Or do you consider the virus just one more risk in life? Give us the buzz on your reactions to West Nile in Canada.

How totally irrisponsible so many who commented are. Having a dear friend suffer for over a year due to WNV, to be witness to the decline of her health and mental wellbeing is shocking. A once strong, healthy, hard working woman has been reduced to being drug dependant for pain and unable to work due to one small insect. This is a serious virus and ignoring it or lessen the dire effects is criminal, especially if you are not protecting children and not informing visitors. Do you not insist that those in vehicles wear seatbelts because what are the chances of getting into a crash? Come on Canada educate yourselves and protect yourselves, family and friends. |

Came across this site by accident. We do municipal programs to eliminate mosquitoes and black flies in an environmentaly friendly way using a bacteria (Bti). I can't give my email here but you can try "info at biomosquitocontrol dot ca" if you want and can figure this out. |

Hello, We purchased a new house in January, and the day we moved in we saw mosquitoes. We thought it was a fluke, but we have seen many more since then - AND I AM ALLERGIC TO THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean really badly - so I need some help.
We are thinking that maybe they are nesting in the sump pump - could that be? We hear it working whenever there is rain. BUT we see them in the basement, the main floor - kitchen, living room, front entry AND we see them in the 3 bedrooms on the top floor (just one or two once in a while). I need to get rid of them!!! Could they be making their way around the house from the basement?!?!?! |

I live in Rockville, Maryland, USA and
I have been constantly bitten by
muskitos this summer. I became bitten
just in between a short walk to my
car. I literally can not be out of the
house. Just ordered repeller by
Sunbeam, hope it will work for me.
Definitely will not like to contract
west nile diesease. I life will be
perfect without muskitos, I am looking
forward to winter already where
muskitos are nowhere close. |
