Although earlier explorers had gathered clues as to the location of the Utjulik wreck they had all been relayed second- or third-hand. They were generally consistent and tended to give general directions, but the most detailed account, indeed the only first-hand one emerged from an interview with an old man conducted by members of the Schwatka Expedition of 1879. This was the only tale told by an informant who claimed to have personally visited the ship before it sank.
The testimony was preserved independently by Schwatka, his journalist companion Gilder, and by Heinrich Klutschak who was hired as cook and helper. Each man recorded slightly different details of the interview. Although all are consistent a careful reading of each allows for a fuller understanding of what was actually said than could be obtained from any solitary account.
