Two ships were part of the Franklin Expedition — the Terror and the Erebus.

The Terror:
A Vesuvius-class bomb ship, the Terror weighed approximately 340 tonnes and had a wooden hull. The ship was designed by Sir Henry Peake and built in Topsham, England in 1813.

The Erebus:
A Hecla-class bomb ship, the Erebus weighed approximately 340 tonnes and like the Terror, had a wooden hull. The ship was designed by Sir Henry Peake and was built in the dockyard in Pembroke, Wales, in 1826.

Both the Terror and the Erebus were built to withstand naval bombardments. They were both fitted with propellers that were powered by steam engines and painted black with a wide yellow stripe running along their sides. To assist in pushing the ships through the ice, the front of each vessel was covered with iron sheets.      »
