In 1857, Franklin's wife, Lady Jane, purchased and outfitted a steam yacht, the Fox, and appointed Francis Leopold McClintock to head the search. However, her attempts proved fruitless. Franklin's wife had to accept that she would never see her husband alive again.
Although there have been many discoveries that have unlocked some of the obscurity surrounding the Franklin Expedition over the years, the mystery surrounding Franklin's body and two ships remains. Neither theTerror nor the Erebus has been located. And the body of Franklin himself remains undiscovered.
