With technology developed by Conserval Engineering of Toronto, a factory near Coimbatore, India, is using solar power to dry marigolds for animal feed. Originally designed to heat buildings, the technology has been adapted to India’s sunshine and high fuel costs. If the drying process is a daytime operation, fuel costs are nil.

India produces 100 million tonnes of Portland cement each year and, in the process, causes 80 million tonnes of carbon dioxide to be released into the atmosphere. To reduce these emissions, a technology developed by Natural Resources Canada and implemented by the Confederation of Indian Industry replaces cement with fly ash, a by-product of coal combustion.
