Interest in aboriginal life started in Germany with the romantic stereotypes of writer Karl May (1842–1912) and set off large-scale collecting of Canadian materials. Today, the Museum of Ethnology in Berlin has a separate wing devoted to Germany’s collection of North American aboriginal artifacts, including an Inuit caribou-skin jacket.
