Canadian scientists are working in a drought-stricken and densely populated region in northeastern Brazil to develop groundwater resources for rural people. The goal is to teach Brazilians to use the limited water supply efficiently. The team also helps local social workers educate farmers about water conservation and waste control.

 


Radio Canada International (RCI) has added a Portuguese news and information program in Brazil to its worldwide services. It’s a half-hour of Canadian and Brazilian current affairs airing weekly on 300 AM and FM stations and hosted by Quebec journalist Hector Vilar. RCI has been on the air for more than 60 years.

 

Walter and Memory Lewis have searched the rain forests of South America, identifying medicinal plants and warning that their destruction is costing humanity potential cures for diseases. After a career that began at the University of British Columbia, Walter is now professor emeritus of biology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
