The Trans Canada Ecotour routes are divided into landscape
regions, each with a map showing the location of selected
points of interest. Each point of interest is numbered
and the distances between points are provided. For some
points, the nearest highway exit number is given as
a location reference. You can see many of the described
features without stopping; however, some stops and detours
will certainly add to your pleasure. It is suggested
that you read about each map section and its points
of interest in advance. The Ecotours are designed for
either easterly or westerly travel and often include
optional side-trips.
From the boundary waters of the Pigeon
River to the locks on the historic St. Marys
River, this Ecotour explores the entire
Canadian coastline of the world’s largest
freshwater lake — Lake Superior. Journey
through the incredible mesa and canyon
country of Thunder Bay and Nipigon, and
along the spectacularly rugged Lake Superior
coastline to Marathon. Then travel inland
through northern boreal forest, re-emerging
into the Great Lakes –- St.Lawrence Forests
near Michipicoten Harbour. From here to
journey’s end, rich human and natural
histories are intertwined along the many
rivers, bays and islands.
