The Northwest Passage was one of the most coveted geographical prizes of the 19th
century. Dozens of ships attempted to find it, and most, like the doomed Franklin expedition, failed. Times have changed, however; ever-growing numbers of cruise ships and freighters make the transit each year with the benefit of modern charts, satellite navigation and thinning ice.
This week, Canada is taking the reins of the Arctic Council as the Northwest Passage literally and figuratively heats up. Canada claims rights to the route, although that has been disputed by other nations - but that is far from the only disputed claim in the Arctic. Debates over mineral rights, territorial boundaries and Aboriginal rights have been ongoing for centuries.

Solar activity — the source of the northern lights — is expected to hit an 11-year peak in 2013. While photographers and sky-gazers across Canada catch the stunning light shows with their heads tilted toward the sky, NASA is capturing images of auroras from a different angle: space.

Here's your virtual chance to get a glimpse of life in Arctic Canada.
Google Street View images of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut are now online.
Google used a special tricycle with a camera mounted on top to capture the street scenes this summer. The company then worked with the community to create the detailed online map.
But it's not just the streets viewers can explore. Google Maps takes viewers inside key buildings, too. Check out souvenirs at the Arctic Closet or visit the Kitikmeot Heritage ...

I recently had the opportunity to interview Michelle Swallow, author of the Mackenzie River Paddling Guide.
