Learning the land

Todd and I were in Nain, Labrador last week getting ready to head out into the wilds of Nunatsiavut and Nunavik. I’d conducted a bunch of interviews already to get a perspective of the landcsape from the Labrador Inuit and others who've lived on the land and the coast here for generations.

Food insecurity and facebook

Things that usually clutter Facebook newsfeeds: cat videos, Instagram pics and party invitations. And increasingly, at least in Nunavut’s capital city, caribou carcasses. 
In a startling shift away from the long-rooted Inuit custom of sharing food among families, a growing number of opportunistic northerners are instead using Facebook to sell their traditional food.

Caribou conservation is complex

That much at least is clear in Environment Canada’s recovery strategy for boreal caribou, a subpopulation of Woodland caribou that is listed as Threatened under the federal Species At Risk Act registry. The ministry released a draft recovery plan in late August for public review for a period of 60 days.

October 25 was to be the last day for members of the public to offer their input on the recovery strategy.
