If you want to tackle a multi-day hike in Canada, you’ll be carrying in food, a camp stove and cleaning supplies on top of clothing, tents and sleeping bags. No one loves our national parks’ scenery more than I do, but all that gear can weigh you down, and if you’re walking with kids, you end up carrying even more weight. For wildlife photography pros shooting Nikon, the company’s 70-200 mm, F2.8 lens has long been an essential part of the kit. In my work as a Canadian Geographic editor, I’ve often admired the crispness and saturation that our photographers are able to produce with this lens, and its range of focal lengths is just about perfect for shooting wildlife at relatively close range.
The catch: a whopping $2,399 price tag.

Elephant Island fills my camera’s viewfinder — the legendary island reaches up to the sky with its dark precipitous mountains. An eternity of snow and ice clings to what seems like impossible angles. We scan the shore looking for Point Wylde — the spit of a beach where Shackleton’s men spent five months waiting to be rescued.
