Canadian Geographic's Jan/Feb 2005 issue ranked #1 for extra-large magazine
June 2006
Canadian Geographic's "Bison" issue beat out Canadian House & Home, Canadian Living, Châtelaine and Maclean's for best newsstand issue for an extra-large magazine format (total circulation over 200,000).
Canadian Geographic's senior marketing manager Ian McKelvie was on hand to accept the award at Mags U in Toronto, Ont. "On behalf of taxidermists everywhere..." McKelvie jokes, then thanks Canadian Geographic's newsstand distributors, and the hard work of Canadian Geographic's marketing and editorial staff for this success.

Online subscription push wins first
June 2006
Canadian Geographic's Christmas Gift Subscription Interstitial for the last holiday season was recognized at the Circulation Managament Association's ACE (Award for Circulation Excellence) June 8, 2006. The campaign resulted in 1009 gift subscriptions with a net of 995 orders in a 5-week period. The costs to create and deliver the campaign are negligible. This resulted in a cost per order that is substantially lower than traditional campaigns despite the discounted price. "We consider this campaign to be a huge success," says Ian McKelvie, senior marketing manager at Canadian Geographic who accepted the award on behalf of Erin Rogers-Lay.

CG's 75th anniversay is gold
May 2006
The International Gallery of Superb Printing has awarded Quebecor World Aurora a Gold award for recognition of excellence for superb craftsmanship in the production of Canadian Geographic “75th Anniversary” Issue. Congratulations to Canadian Geographic's production team for their hard work and craftmanship.

Webby Awards
May 2006
Called "The Oscars of the Internet" by the New York Times, the Webby Awards has chosen to recognize Canadian Geographic’s online atlas, The Canadian Atlas Online, as well as CG Kids Atlas Online as official honourees of the 10th Annual Webby Awards. Both CG’s atlas sites made the top 20 percent of the over 5,500 websites submitted to the awards from over 40 countries.
"It is a great achievement to be honoured by the Webbies," says Gilles Gagnier, New Media Manager at Canadian Geographic. "But to gain two recognitions in one year is outstanding."

National Magazine Awards
June 2005
Congratulatons to Canadian Geographic contributor Lana Slezic
who won gold in the photojournalism category at the National Magazine
Awards Friday, June 10 in Toronto, for her arresting portrait of Canadian
troops in Afghanistan in "Operation Kabul" (Nov/Dec).
J. Kevin Dunn's photo essay "Walking
the line" (Mar/Apr),
which recounted his journey along rail lines in Saskatchewan, won silver
in the Words and Pictures category, along with CG photo editor
Margaret Williamson, designer Stephen Hanks and editor Monique Roy-Sole.
CG also earned an honourable mentions for Terry Glavin's story "Cougar
attack!" (May/June)
and Wayne Grady's "Stone
diaries" (Jan/Feb)
in the Science, Technology & the Environment category. Bob Kull's account
of his year on an island off the Chilean coast, "My
year alone in the wilderness" (May/June),
also received an honourable mentions in the Travel category. Our 75th
anniversary theme issue, "Global
citizen" (Nov/Dec),
received an honourable mentions in the Editorial Package category.
In the Words & Pictures category, Nance Ackerman and Drew Hayden Taylor
received an honourable mentions for their feature on powwows, "Rhythm
of nations" (Jul/Aug).
Not to be outdone, Thursday, June 9 at the Canadian Society for Magazine
Editors banquet, Canadian Geographic came in second in the
award for Best Magazine of the Year.

VIDFEST (Vancouver International Design Festival)
June 2005
Recognized as "truly awesome ... rich and informative," the CG
Kids Atlas Online came second out of 55 international entries in
the Education category at the Vancouver International Digital Festival,
or VIDFEST, in
June. The country's biggest digital content event, VIDFEST chose the
interactive website, which caters to 8- to 14-year-olds, for its easy
navigation and fun approach to teaching Canada's geographical, cultural,
historical and economic highlights.

National Magazine Awards
May 2002
Canadian Geographic received two gold awards and six honourable
mentions at the 26th annual National Magazine Awards in May. The magazine
won in the Editorial Package category for its special issue on food
(Jan/Feb
2002) and writer David Lees took the top prize in Science and Technology
for "Coral Champions" (May/June
2002). Lees also won an honourable mention for the same article
at the Science in Society Journalism Awards from the Canadian Science
Writers Association.
At the Canadian
Society of Magazine Editors awards in June, Canadian Geographic received
an honourable mention for Best Magazine of the Year for magazines
with a circulation of more than 150,000 in 2002.
In April, CG captured third prize in the magazine category at the 2002 Northern
Lights Awards for "Changing
Courses" (Sept/Oct
2002), a look at the new Northwest Territories
by long-time contributor Ed Struzik. The cover of the same issue
was also a finalist in the 2003 Canadian Newsstand Awards category
for magazines with a circulation of more than 200,000. Canadian
Geographic also received two Circulation Management Association
of Canada Awards for Circulation Excellence for promotional efforts
in 2002.
